Monday, May 8th: Hanging Out On Little Dickson The night was cool, but I slept much better than I had on White Partridge. The day was clear and warm. By 9:00 am, it was 12°c , and by noon it would climb to 20.0°c . After breakfast, we all got our fishing gear ready and were loaded up in our canoes by 9:00 am. ![]() My canoe at rest and a worm waiting to be taken by a fish….I hope! ![]() Markus was ready to try fishing. Markus and I trolled down Little Dickson, south heading around the horseshoe shape lake. We wanted to both check out the area and fish. Bo and Sheila were ahead of us. Preacher and Dogbyte fished the local area around our island and checked out the creek that goes to Poplar Lake. Markus and I didn't get any fish that morning. We had worms to use as well. It was so beautiful, relaxing and cruising the lake. We came to the end of the lake that almost connects with the bay that our island is at. We got out and check out the surroundings. Evidence of canoes going across this small strip of land is seen on the rocks. Cedars are plentiful in this area. I thought this would be a great time to stock up on firewood. Markus and I gathered some cedar logs that were very solid and dry. Many were lying down and easy to drag to the canoe. I tied some 4 or 5 together and we dragged them in the water back to the island. By this time, everyone was back. I got some funny looks because the logs were in the water. “Don’t worry, they'll burn great”, and they did! Bo and Sheila had a few specks to cook up. I think Preacher got a speck, but threw it back. ![]() Bo, with one of his specs of the day. ![]() Markus and I were going back to camp with some firewood in the canoe and logs in-tow! After some lunch, I grabbed some rest in my hammock. Everyone was relaxing around camp and enjoying the weather. It was cool, but nice. I woke up to see Dogbyte was in his hammock, and in his sleeping bag. Cozy. We decided to eat supper around 5:30 before heading out to fish again. Bo cooked his spec on the open fire. I think Markus and I had some yucky freeze-dried Mountain Chilli. I do recall tasting some of Bo’s spec. Preacher was making his regular pasta. Dogbyte was having a rice dish of some sort, mixed with tuna. Dogbyte brought his cool camp-water filter-system for us to use. You just fill the bag up with water and hang it up. Then, put your water bottle under the hose outlet and let gravity take over. It's slower than pumpers and many times people, including myself, would walk away to do something and forget about it running, letting it overflow the water bottle. An abundance of green pollen was on the water surface. I'm sure it made its way into the filter. Dogbyte would have to buy another filter at about 40 bucks. Thanks for sharing! He also set up a shower stall made out of a tarp around a few trees and hung one of those solar shower-bags inside. I never did use it. I braved the cold water in the lake. But others did and appreciate it. Thanks again Dogbyte! ![]() Bo’s spec on the fire. ![]() This view is from top of the hill. By 7:30 pm, Markus and I had gone out to get some film footage .. before we started to fish. ![]() Markus at work. We, (not me personally) found that just trolling the shore by the mainland and making loops back and forth was the most productive. ![]() Sheila’s turn! I was skunked again. Markus got some strikes, but nothing to brag about. The night was so peaceful. It was 13°c at 8:00 pm. We fished until 8:30 pm. ![]() The sunset view from the canoe .. between our island and mainland. We all sat around the fire, talked of the day events, and planned on what we would do the next day. It was another great day in Algonquin Park. Can’t beat it. |
