Help celebrate Algonquin Outfitters 55th anniversary (1961-2016) and Tom Thomson’s 100 Anniversary of his death in Algonquin Park (1917-2017).

The Paddle Art Contest connects a couple of things in local culture, paddling and art. To enter the contest all you have to do is visit an Algonquin Outfitters store. There’s a $25 entry fee and for that we provide the canvas for your masterpiece; either an unfinished paddle blank or a rough paddle blank (for carving). It’s your job to create something unique. It’s not limited to painting, you could burn an image or design into the paddle, or carve it into something unique it’s totally up to you. Full details here.

Les Dempsey (Solo Lesta) has just posted YouTube videos of the first two days of a solo kayak trip he took earlier this month ... a 4-day loop out of Access Point #6 (Smoke Lake), through Big Porcuping, North Grace, Lake Louisa, up through Head Lake, ending at Cache Lake ... Smoke Lake Loop. The heat and solitude definitely gave Les some food for thought!

Be sure to revisit the vid-page for subsequent postings of the trip-days' videos.

Cobi Sharpe has just completed the posting of the first part of her canoe trip from Magnetawan down the Petawawa River, through Misty Lake and on to White Trout Lake. The trip-log can be found at Algonquin through Magnetawan Lake – Part One, on her Waboose Adventures blog.

"After lunch and annihilation from the deer flies, we winded down the river to another 80m portage and a 200m right across the river. Eventually into Grassy Bay, we had covered a good amount of ground over the past couple of days. The headwind was at our backs when we sailed into White Trout."

Ian Tendy has just added the trip-log of a recent canoe-trip to his blog. ... Canada Day: Rock-Harry Lake.

"This portage looked very lovely, hosting three falls, but we were in no mood to slow down and take pictures. Seems like every mosquito absent in the past two months had come to greet us at the rocky take out at the bottom of the portage. They didn’t let up as we sunk up to our knees in the soupy entrance to the Galipo River either. We bounded over 4 or 5 beaver dams as we tried to get away from the flying menace. Within 15 minutes we were on the last portage of the day, heading to Welcome Lake."

Cathy Q. (aka "Cici") has made a couple of trip-log additions to her blog ... her recent Cedar Lake to Mink Lake: June 11 to 14, 2016 and her earlier Grand Lake: May 20 to 22, 2016.

"We didn't have dinner, our steak and veggies would wait until tomorrow. It wasn't long until I was in my hammock. The wind was howling so loudly in the pines above me, I was very anxious that the canoe would be flipped over and carried by the wind into the water. I got up and tied it so I could sleep better."

"Neelands" has made another addition to his Smugmug Canoe Trips Galleries. It's a photo trip-log of his 2016 June 3-5 Pen Lake .. a two night solo canoe trip in which he explored the shoreline and some campsites of Pen Lake. The trip-log includes 22 well-captioned photos, which can also be viewed as a slideshow.

"After settling on this site, I found a swamp out in the back, the source of a gazillion mosquitoes. Add early June black flies. Insanity."

Maegan M has a trip-log on her blog of her recent late-season Algonquin in Three Days: Rock Lake, Pen Lake, Clydegale Lake, Madawaska River.

"Halfway down the lake we were greeted by a family of otters. We hung in the water watching them until the mom gave us a few warning snorts. The sky was crystal clear and sunny, and we quickly warmed up. The portage back into Pen Lake was easy, DSC_0050but we found some high winds on Pen Lake."

This is also the time to catch-up with her earlier Algonquin in Three Days: Cache, Madawaska, Head Creek, Head Lake trip-log.
