Downloadable PDF Newsletter

On May 2nd, 29th, the ABR Steering Committee passed a motion to release a compact one-page black-and-white newsletter in downloadable PDF format, for online distribution.

It is a simple single-sided, letter sized sheet describing the ABR's objectives, indicating our website address and detailing some of the "Reduce Our Impact" guidelines. It can be folded twice (lengthwise and then widthwise ) to render it compact .. or even widthwise once again, to render it even more compact.

ABR members and the general public are encouraged to download, print-up and photocopy additional copies so that they can take them on camping trips to share with friends and anyone else they may meet along the way. With the camping season already starting, it was considered appropriate to initially produce a small low cost item for informal outdoor distribution.

The greater part of this handout's content is based on material developed by Robert Withnell, a volunteer serving on the ABR's Impact Committee.

The newsletter PDF file can be downloaded here ... The Otter - Summer 2008 Newsletter - ABR .

Options For Hard-copy Low-impact Guides For Algonquin Backcountry Recreationalists

Compact Pocket - Wallet Guide ......

This guide would be 2 3/4 x 4 inches when folded. It would be produced in black & white, on thin, semi-gloss, water resistant stock. It would open to 4 x 22" .. with front cover, back cover and 14 "pages" in between. It's general design is based on the digital camera pocket-guide shown below.

In its folded state, it can be slipped into the bill section of a wallet.

Or, it can be stored between the two halves of a wallet.

"Raven" Look-alike Guide ......

Openly based on the Raven's appearance, but with a different logo, it would be produced on similar white paper stock. It could also be "double-columned". To keep cost down, it could be without a colour banner. At 7 x 8 1/2" it could be distributed alongside the Raven.

2 pages, two on a single 8 1/2 x 14" sheet.

4 pages, on a single folded 8 1/2 x 14" sheet.

8 pages, on two folded 8 1/2 x 14" sheet, stapled.

Permanent Bound Guide ......

The booklet would be 4 x 6 inches. It would be produced on thick, water resistant stock, with durable spiral binding (preferably wire-metal).

Immediately below, are photos of a booklet produced by the Region of York for its "York Regional Forest" .. describing its trails, forest management, procurements, advisory team, hiking trails, maps, etc. It serves that organization's needs. We could start with its physical form, create our own content, and produce our guide on waterproof stock.

Its 4 x 6 inch dimensions and durable construction would facilitate easy portability. Unlike the text commentary found on the back of the large, cumbersome, regular paper Canoe Routes Map, this booklet would be more convenient to access and read.

Content would focus on recreationalists maintaining a "low-impact" presence in the backcountry .. specifically within the Algonquin experience.

Over time, subsequent editions of the booklet could be expanded to include additional initiatives ...

  - minimizing recreationalists impact on Algonquin Park's environment.
  - explaining the new "Forest Recreation Visitor Comment Management System (FRVCMS)
  - facilitating backcountry recreationalists' effective reporting of maintenance needs and improper practices.

Funding needs for this project would be considerable and would depend on corporate sponsors and/or organizations such as the Trillium Foundation. This alternative would not be a beginning initiative, but rather could be issued in response to donations or at special occasions.

"Leave No Trace" Ethics Card Format ......

From Derek Specht: "I was shown this card at the Feb 29/08 meeting with the park staff. It is the US forest service/US Parks Service Leave No Trace card."
